House of the Dragon season 2: Who is the dragon present in the Valley?

“He is big and fearsome. But savage, alas.”

During season 2 of House of the Dragon, The audience quickly understood that there were more dragons roaming Westeros than those shown on screen. This was confirmed with the entry into the race of Seasmoke (in the language of George RR Martin) in episode 6, claimed first by Lord Steffon Sombrelyn, then naturally by Addam of Carène (Clinton Liberty), presented as the illegitimate son of the Lord of the Tides, Lord Corlys Velaryon. Jacaerys' plan is starting to bear fruit, and the Black camp now finds itself with an additional dragon rider. But he will certainly not be the last, because other dragons remain without a master, and one of them seems to have found refuge in the heights of the Vale.

House of the Dragon, season 2: we count the dragons after episode 5

In the home of Lady Jeyne Arryn, Rhaena Velaryon and the remaining children of Rhaenyra have found refuge on the sole condition that a dragon be sent with them to protect the Vale. Rhaena therefore arrives with three eggs and hopes to see them hatch soon. On an excursion with young Joffrey, the latter discovers several charred animal carcasses. Following this lead, the two come across an impressive expanse completely burned – a sign that a dragon of a large size has passed by there. “There is a great dragon in the Valley.”

But among the dragons identified so far as being masterless: Vermithor and Dragonwing (introduced by Jacaerys and both having had Daemon's ancestors as masters), Sheep-Thief, the Cannibal, and Grey Ghost (mentioned in the novel Fire and Blood), which one is present in the Valley?

Unlike the book written by GRR Martin, the series introduces a dragon outside of its usual hunting ground (the island of Dragonstone, the seat of House Targaryen). And if for the moment, there is no certainty as to the identity of the one whose path Rhaena and Joffrey crossed, some clues allow us to identify it.

“He is big and fearsome. But savage, alas.”says Lady Jeyne. This description, although brief, eliminates the first two from the list. To decide between the other three, the answer lies in Fire and Blood :

“None of the dragonseeds were foolish enough to bother the Cannibal (…) Some went in search of Grey Ghost, but without success in finding him, for he had always been a fleeting creature. Sheep Thief proved easier to flush out.”

Larger than Caraxes, Syras, Sea-Smoke and Meleys, Sheepstealer seems to be the dragon of the Eyriea. Easy to find, it is nevertheless not the easiest to tame. So who, in House of the Dragoncould become his master? Two paths open up: that of the novel and therefore the introduction of a new emblematic character, well known to readers, or that leading to Rhaena – which would represent a big change.

Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell), Daemon's (Matt Smith) second daughter, is an ideal candidate. Never able to claim a dragon, she has often felt left out. Her sister and half-siblings are all dragon riders—except her. Her only hope lies in the three eggs she possesses.

But if in Fire and Blood one of them hatches, in the series, the chances are minimal. Indeed, the director of episode 3 which introduced these eggs, Geeta Patel confirmed that these were the same eggs held years later by the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones. So here are the shell versions of Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion…

Rhaena will not be able to claim them. That leaves this mysterious giant dragon. In any case, whether it is Rhaena or another dragon seed, it is said of the dragon rider (or dragoness) of Voleur-de-Mouton that he is her first and last master.
