Vice President Kamala Harris was criticized on social media for her exaggerated facial expressions during the ABC News presidential debate against former President Trump on Tuesday.
Harris' smirk was captured repeatedly on the split screen as Trump answered questions from the debate moderators. Both Harris and Trump's microphones were muted when the other candidate had time to speak, a rule Harris' campaign had tried to change. Harris was left with only her facial gestures to convey her contempt for the Republican candidate.
At times, the camera caught Harris rolling her eyes, frowning or narrowing her eyes at her opponent as he spoke. Other times, she laughed or appeared to mock Trump’s responses with exaggerated smiles.

Her many faces were immediately mocked by social media users, with some claiming they represented her nervousness and discomfort on stage, while others called them rehearsed and “pathetic.”
“Kamala Harris does clearly rehearsed routines instead of answering questions. Then she makes rehearsed, exaggerated facial expressions when Trump speaks. She comes across as fake and weak,” New York Post columnist Miranda Devine wrote on X.
“Content-wise, Harris is winning. Visually, she’s hurting herself. #Debate2024,” wrote pollster Frank Luntz.
“Kamala Harris’ exaggerated facial expressions during this debate are pathetic. They convey a sense of dishonesty and nervousness,” said Ryan Saavedra, senior reporter for the Daily Wire.
“So far… HARRIS is making way more faces than TRUMP on this split screen. Not sure how that's going to resonate with voters,” Fox News congressional correspondent Aisha Hasnie posted.
“Kamala Harris has been trained way too much to make facial expressions because of the muted microphones. It’s uncomfortable and weird,” said conservative writer Carmine Sabia.

Journalist Ian Miles Cheong wrote: “Kamala Harris should have taken more acting classes. Her facial expressions betray only barely concealed anxiety.”
“The #Debate2024 split screen right now is hurting Kamala Harris because of her facial expressions. I can’t believe her debate coaches didn’t push this,” agreed conservative media personality Ford O’Connell.
Former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon joked: “My kids make the same facial expressions as Kamala Harris when they’re in trouble.”
“Harris has nothing but smug, TikTok-ready facial expressions and friendly moderators who are supportive of her tonight. All of her responses are canned and fake,” said Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action.
