The director of Dune defends his composer.
The soundtrack of Dune part 2 signed Hans Zimmer is not eligible for the 2025 Oscars, whose nominations will be revealed on Friday, January 17. And it doesn't please at all Denis Villeneuvewho was moved by it during a screening of the film for the directors' union, reports Slash Film:
“I'm totally against the Academy's decision to exclude Hans, frankly, because I think his soundtrack is one of the best of the year. I rarely use the term genius, but Hans is one.“
The Academy of Oscars has determined that the score of Dune 2 included too many elements from the first film released in 2021, for which Hans Zimmer received the Oscar for best music in 2022. However, according to the regulations “there must not be more than 20% of pre-existing themes or music borrowed from previous scores of works in the same franchise.”
Despite the resumption of elements from the first film, the soundtrack of Dune 2 features many original themes that have left their mark, such as “A Time of Quiet Between the Storms”. And one could even argue that the sequel's soundtrack, like the more epic and action-packed film, is even better.
According to Denis Villeneuve, the soundtrack of Dune part 2 East “obviously anchored in that of Part 1, because there is continuity“. The two parties form “a large film cut in two“, recalled the director.
Villeneuve, however, assures that he does not want to cause controversy (“I'm not here to complain“), but he insists: “The soundtrack is really a continuation of Part 1“.
Dune 2 was able to be nominated for the Golden Globes, which are more flexible on this point, but it was Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who were rewarded for Challengers.
