The Game of Thrones author had a keen eye on Daemon.

In the last episode of season two of House of the Dragonthe Black side has gathered its last ground and air forces to fight the Greens. While Rhaenyra has welcomed new dragonriders, Daemon meets with the lords of the Riverlands to rally them to his cause and that of his wife. In the court of Harrenhaal, he holds a war council where they meet the leaders of each household, as well as a certain Oscar Tully, Lord of Riverrun, who, despite his young age, has shown audacity in standing up to the Targaryen.

As if to ensure the smooth running of this council, in the background, stands a huge weirwood, a heart tree, a place of worship for the Old Gods venerated in the North of Westeros. Spectators have already been able to admire such trees at Winterfell in Game Of Thrones. Each trunk is engraved with a face supposed to represent the divinity. In Harrenhaal, the one visible is none other than that of GRR Martin – the author of the novels Game of Thrones And Fire and Blood which inspired the series we know.

As explained in the making-of of episode 7 by the HBO creative team in charge of the sets, the idea was to pay tribute to the man without whom all this would never have existed. Dominic Masters, the artistic director, explained:

The brief was to make it look like it's him, but you're never really sure. The idea is that you don't look right away and think, 'This is George RR Martin', but let's come back to it and say to ourselves: 'Oh, wouldn't that be…?'

The author himself validated the concept.

Although not a real physical presence, but rather an easter egg, this small cameo is GRR Martin's first in a series he originated. Appearing in House of the Dragonthe writer is breaking the rule he set for himself a few years ago. Indeed, two years ago, at the San Diego Comic-Con, Martin had declared that he would not make any appearances in series based on his works until he had finished his book, The Winds of Winter.

Last volume of the saga Game Of Thrones awaited by fans since 2013, it seems that we will have to wait a while longer before being able to hold it in our hands – if it is ever released. But in the meantime, one thing is for sure, season two of House of the Dragon will end next Monday on Max, with memorable battles.
