Two Georgia parents are facing child cruelty charges, including for allegedly imprisoning their four teenagers in their home by keeping them in their bedroom for extended periods of time.

James and Cindy Spooner were each charged with four counts of first-degree child cruelty and false imprisonment, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

Investigators executed a search warrant at the family's four-bedroom ranch-style home in Whitesburg, Ga., and found four teenagers — three girls and one boy — in conditions that investigators described as inhumane.

Each child's bedroom had a deadbolt lock on the outside of the door, and exterior doors and windows were closed in an apparent attempt to prevent children from leaving the home, the sheriff's office said.

The teens told investigators they were locked in their room for hours, sometimes days, with only a bucket to go to the bathroom. The children also said they were only given food at their parents' discretion.

“This is a heartbreaking situation for these innocent children, and no one should be treated the way they were,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “We pray for their mental and physical recovery and hope that the offenders will be severely punished by the justice system for these horrific acts.”

The matter remains under investigation.
