Former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki admits ABC interview was 'just okay'

MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki admitted Sunday that President Biden's recent interview may not be enough to help her former boss.

Psaki opened her show by noting that Democratic figures began calling for the president to resign after his disastrous debate against former President Trump last June. In the week after the debate, Biden sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos to try to address the criticism.

However, Psaki noted, that was probably not enough to reverse the trend.

“I would say it went pretty well for the president,” Psaki said. “In many ways, people watching saw what they wanted to see, because for some, he looked better than he did in the debate. He did. He was clearer. He seemed much better prepared to make his case against Trump. There were also moments — and not just one — that didn’t go well.”

She noted that Biden appeared “in denial” about the state of the race against Trump and did little to reassure his supporters about his staying power.

“When the interview was over, it left us all in a kind of purgatory for the moment. It was better than the debate, not a masterstroke at all. Even if it was a masterstroke, an interview certainly doesn’t have the power to change the perception of 72% of voters, according to a CBS poll, who don’t believe Biden has the mental or cognitive health to serve. Even the White House and the campaign know that,” Psaki said.

During her monologue, Psaki also said that the “panic” within the Democratic Party has not gone away, with most people uncertain about what the next step will be.

“The questions I get in text messages from friends and family are twofold: What’s going to happen and what’s the best path forward?” Psaki said. “And I’m not going to sit here this afternoon and tell you I know the answer to either of those questions.”

Regarding Democrats eager to replace Biden, she warned that any alternative path would have to begin soon as the Democratic National Convention and elections are fast approaching.

“Time is running out. That’s a fact,” Psaki said.

Psaki previously served as White House press secretary under Biden until May 2022. Shortly after, she was hired as a contributor to MSNBC before finally hosting her own show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” in 2023.
