The launch announced at $40 million on Sunday evening was, in reality, even lower.
$2.2 million. This may seem like a drop in the ocean in the total revenues of a film like Joker: Folie à Deux. But these 2.2 million dollars are still a task for the huge, long-awaited blockbuster.
This weekend, the film Todd Phillips did not bring in $40 million at the US box office, as reported by the American press on Sunday evening (which often provides very precise estimates). For its American opening, Joker 2 actually stopped at $37.8 million. The final count of greenbacks is therefore even worse than the flop revealed on Sunday.
For comparison, Joker 1 had brought in 39 million dollars… on its Friday day alone in 2019! To finish at 96 million at the end of its first weekend at the US box office, thus beating the historical record for an October release in the United States.
We have known for a while that Joker 2 wouldn't do as much. Forecasts predicted a score of around $60 or $65 million. It will ultimately be half as much. Bad reviews initially dampened the buzz and word of mouth in recent days completed Phoenix and Gaga's dance.
Let us remember that Joker had finished at over $1 billion in global revenue 5 years ago.
