Evacuations, school closures and road closures for Franklin Fire in Malibu – NBC Los Angeles

Hundreds of firefighters continue to battle the flames of the Franklin Fire that started in the Malibu area Monday night.

The fire is currently burning 2,200 acres near Pepperdine University, prompting closures and evacuations.

Evacuation orders

Evacuation orders have been issued for the following areas:

• South of Piuma Road
• North of Pacific Coast Highway
• East of Las Virgenes Road and Malibu Road
• West of Carbon Beach Terrace

Evacuation warnings

Evacuation Warnings have been issued for the following areas:

• East of Las Virgenes between Mulholland Highway to the north and Piuma Road to the South.
• Between Stunt Road to the north and Los Flores to the South
• East of Carbon Beach Terrace, West of Old Malibu Road, North of Pacific Crest highway to the evacuation order boundary
• Topanga Zone 8 and 10

School closures

Students at Pepperdine University were ordered to shelter in place, with the school issuing a statement on social media. But as of 8:05 a.m., the shelter in place order was lifted.

After assessing campus conditions at daybreak, the university is lifting the shelter-in-place protocol. Campus conditions are safe for members of the community to return to student residences and on-campus homes. The community is strongly encouraged to remain on campus and stay…

All schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu School District have also been closed due to the fire.

Road Closures

According to Caltrans, Pacific Coast Highway is closed, except for evacuations, between Topanga Canyon Blvd and Corral Canyon Road.

Any additional road closures can be found on the LA County Public Works website.

Shelters

A shelter has been established at the Palisade Rec Center located on 851 Alma Real Drive in Pacific Palisades.

The center is open to everyone who has been displaced by the wildfire. Pets are also welcome in carriers and crates.
