Emilia Perez in good place for the 2025 Oscars

Jacques Audiard's musical would be a good choice according to the American press, while The Seeds of the Wild Fig Tree will be the main competitor.

Will France shine again at the Oscars this year?

After the cardboardAnatomy of a Fall in 2024, it could be the turn ofEmilia Perez during the 2025 Oscars. The musical comedy of Jacques Audiard is one of the three favorites cited by Variety for the Best International Feature Film statuette alongside the drama of Mohammad Rasoulof, The seeds of the wild fig tree and Brazilian thriller I'm still here. Obviously, it's too early to break out the champagne, and Variety specifies that it's “of predictions reflecting the current ranking in the race”.

Nevertheless, the planets seem to align and the American press seems to validate the choice ofEmilia Perez“after riskier choices in recent years.” In 2023, France had chosen Dodin Bouffant to the detriment ofAnatomy of a Fallwinner of the Palme d'Or, while in 2021, the controversial Titanium (yet Palme d'Or) had been chosen to the detriment of The Event (Golden Lion). Variety notes thatEmilia Perez “benefits from the support of Netflix in the United States and that the film is currently generating buzz for several categories during these 2025 Oscars – including best film! This year could be the year France ends more than 30 years of Oscar drought” writes the American magazine. Remember that the last French film to have won the prize for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards is Indochina in 1992.

Emilia Perez will be released in theaters in the United States and Canada on November 1 before being broadcast on Netflix on November 13 (across the Atlantic). And at a minimum, the French candidate can already seriously hope to be among the nominees next March. Which hasn't happened since Les Miserables by Ladj Ly in 2019.
