“I didn’t want to make money with this film,” confides the director of the hit Netflix thriller.
While the first film directed by Anna Kendrick a hit on Netflix, viewed more than 21 million times, the former Twilight confides today that she did not make any money with A Woman at Play. And for good reason, she donated her fees to various charities.
For what ? Because she was uncomfortable with the idea of lining her pockets with this totally sinister true story.
“When Netflix finally bought the film, I knew I was going to make a lot of money from it. But it wasn't until the week before its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival that it really hit me.”tell Anna Kendrick interviewed by the Crime Junkie AF podcast. “When I arrived, I understood that this film was going to generate a lot of money and I asked myself if I was comfortable with that. In fact I was a little disgusted by the idea…”
Because his film tells the story of a serial killer and rapist, Rodney Alcala, who managed to participate in a dating show (like Turn Carousel!) on American TV, in 1978. So Anna Kendrick has chosen to donate her personal earnings to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime, two nonprofit organizations nationwide that support survivors of sexual abuse and violence.
“For me, this film was never a money-making venture.” continues Anna Kendrick. “So I didn't want to make money from this film. The money went to RAINN and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime. It was the least I could do.”
