“Circumstances meant that it didn't go as planned,” the actor confided.

Djimon Hounsouwho played Juba, Maximus' (Russell Crowe) confidant in the first Gladiatorin 2000, will not return in the sequel. If the absence of the hero of the first film is perfectly justified, he should have reappeared, even if only for a few scenes, but his interpreter revealed in the podcast BroBible's Post Credit that he had ultimately not been able to shoot what was planned:

“Honestly? No, I'm not going to be in the movie. And it was a complete accident: we were supposed to do it, but it fell through. I was supposed to be in the sequel… circumstances meant that it didn't go as planned.”

The actor, also seen in Friendship, Blood Diamond Or Guardians of the Galaxydoes not specify the reasons for this change of plan but it could simply be a scheduling problem: during the months of filming of Gladiator 2– still under the direction of Ridley Scott, Djimon Hounsou has worked on three projects, and not the least: Rebel Moon – Part 2, A Quiet Place – Day 1 And Last Breath. With the actors' strike having largely impacted the shooting of Scott's peplum, it could also be that the delays have prevented the original actor from returning…

“Now we are free, and we will meet again. But not yet… not yet.”

Gladiator fans can always console themselves by rewatching the original film (and Juba's famous final line)… or by finding it in the director's cut of Rebel Moonwhich Zack Snyder just released on Netflix?
