Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., called in the new year with a guest essay by The New York Times urging his fellow Democratic lawmakers to abandon the resistance movement and work with President-elect Donald Trump during his second term.

In his article, the congressman admitted that the 2024 election results reveal that voters want the Democratic Party to compromise on major issues, like the economy and immigration, rather than obstruct the agenda of Trump as they did during his first term.

“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to stand up to Mr. Trump at every turn: unite against his bills, block his nominees, and paralyze the machinery of the House and the Senate. That would amount to a mistake,” he said.

Suozzi, who was elected to New York's 3rd Congressional District earlier this year after being vacated by former Republican Rep. George Santos, admitted he was wary of Trump's willingness to compromise with the Democratic lawmakers, citing some of the former president's behavior after the election.

“I am not fooled: some of Mr. Trump's actions provide little assurance that he is prepared to embrace the bipartisanship and compromise essential to a functioning democracy,” he said, emphasizing the new president's “radical cabinet choices,” his demands for the recent government spending bill, and his “hubris” in bringing businessmen and advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy around Capitol Hill.

Suozzi advised that Trump must “embrace his inner negotiator and negotiate with the other party that holds just under half of the seats in the Capitol and key gubernatorial positions across the country,” adding that if Trump does this, ” Democrats should meet him.” halfway rather than being the Party of No.”

The lawmaker then denounced his party's “significant shift to the left” and mentioned that both sides want to work together. “But as a common-sense Democrat who won in a district that Mr. Trump also won, I am certain that our narrowly divided electorate would prefer bipartisan solutions to political gridlock.”

He acknowledged that Trump's victory was a “mandate” from the American people, but clarified that it was not a “mandate for any one party.”

“But in my view, the results of the 2024 campaign were a mandate for border security, immigration reform, low inflation, economic stability and common ground on culture war fights” , he argued.

He went on to give examples of what Democratic compromises could look like, starting with climate change. He said: “Democrats cannot abandon their zeal to fight climate change. At the same time, let's balance our commitment to environmental protection with pragmatic measures that ensure affordable utility bills and manageable costs at the pump.

“Let us move beyond relentless attacks on widely held religious values while ensuring that the rights, safety and dignity of all are respected,” Suozzi said, and admitted that liberals should support “efforts to to make government more efficient and effective,” provided they still advocate “strengthening Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.”

Suozzi said his New Year's resolution was to rise above partisanship and debate while using “common sense.”
