Deadpool & Wolverine: Robert Downey Jr. should have had his cameo as Iron Man, but…

Since the release of Deadpool & Wolverineits creators are multiplying anecdotes concerning the many cameos of the superhero film. Ryan Reynolds had a lot of fun with this concept of a farewell to the mutants of 20th Century Fox, as well as with other incarnations of Wolverine, played mainly by Hugh Jackman in this sequel – a duo that the two actors wanted to see on screen for a long time.

In addition to the confidences of the two stars or the director Shawn Levy, the co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who had already worked on the first two Dead Poolhave notably revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that there was a time when Tony Stark/Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to make a brief appearance. A cameo that ultimately never saw the light of day, since behind the scenes of the production of this film, Kevin Feige was in full negotiations with the star for return in another role at Marvel : that of Doctor Doom.

In the movie released in theaters, Happy Hogan, played by Jon Favreau within the MCU, who is none other than the director of the first two installments ofIron Manis approached by Wade Wilson in the tower of Avengersin 2018, to ask if he can join the team. Deadpool also asks him if Stark can join them for the duration of their discussion, but ultimately, there is no appearance of Tony since Happy quickly answers negatively to his request.

In the first draft of the script, this same scene existed and also ended with Deadpool refusing to join the Avengers, but that refusal should have come from Hogan AND Stark.

“Jon was really great about that scene, Reese details. He waited until we were all okay, until things were completely in place, and then he was okay to show up, and even a little more than we expected. We would have loved the idea of ​​seeing Tony Stark back at that point, but we obviously understood that wasn't possible, given that Downey jumped on stage at Comic-Con to become Dr. Doom just ten seconds after our movie came out!”

Indeed, seeing Tony again after the events ofAvengers Endgame would have probably also been a nice surprise for fans, but this kind of cameo is now difficult to put in place, since after having embodied one of the most famous Avengers for 11 years, Downey Jr. is preparing to become one of Marvel's great villains.
