Congress will certify President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory Monday, as lawmakers gather to count the votes from November’s presidential election.

The certification process is expected to be less eventful compared to four years ago when Trump attempted to overturn his 2020 election loss, resulting in a deadly mob that stormed the Capitol.

Now, Vice President Kamala Harris will carry out her duties in a joint session of Congress to confirm her old political rival as president, following through on a promise for peace despite her election defeat.

“I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory,” Harris said in her concession speech following November’s election. “We will help [Trump] and his team with their transition and we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”

For the first time, Monday’s electoral certification will be considered a National Special Security event, with the Secret Service leading the security effort.

The process will also be bolstered by the Electoral Count Reform Act, a law passed in 2022 solidifying the vice president’s certification role as purely ceremonial.

“Jan. 6 is going to go very smoothly. There’s not going to be any real challenges, quite frankly,” George Washington Politics Professor Todd Belt said. “The margins of victory [in 2024] were so pronounced, and Democrats have more of a respect for the institution of government.”

Confidence in the election results is also different this time around. A new poll shows a majority of Democrats and Republicans believe that the vote in November was counted accurately.

And, while officials are focused on avoiding a Capitol riot repeat, there’s also attention being paid to remembering the events of four years ago.

President Joe Biden is leading the effort, recalling the deadly mob that stormed the Capitol and urging the public not to forget in an op-ed published Sunday night.

Biden pushed back on Republicans and President-elect Trump’s efforts to “rewrite – even erase” the history of that day when democracy was put to the test and prevailed.
