Cold first weekend of winter for Pittsburgh

A few flakes cross western PA today.

THINGS YOU DON’T REALIZE YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT. IF YOUR DAY INCLUDES MAYBE SOME SHOPPING, MAYBE A TRIP TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE, WHAT DO PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW AS THEY TRAVEL OUT? IT’S GOING TO BE COLD. THAT’S GOING TO BE A THEME ALL THROUGH THE WEEKEND. BUT ALSO WE HAVE SOME LOCATION DEPENDENT SNOW SHOWERS WE HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON. WHAT A WAY TO CELEBRATE THE WINTER SOLSTICE! TODAY IS OFFICIALLY IT IS WINTER. IT STARTED OFFICIALLY AT 420 THIS MORNING. TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO STAY BELOW FREEZING THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON, BUT THEN WE TAKE A MILDER TURN AS WE GET CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS DAY AND THE FIRST DAY OF HANUKKAH. WAKING UP THIS MORNING, WE DO HAVE A FEW PATCHES OF FLAKES, MAINLY INTO PARTS OF WESTMORELAND AND FAYETTE COUNTIES. NOW YOU CAN SEE ONE OF THOSE STRIPES COMING IN FROM ABOUT LIGONIER, BACK TOWARDS SOMERSET. ALSO COMING DOWN. 119 FROM SCOTTDALE INTO CONNELLSVILLE, DUNBAR AS WELL MAY EVEN FIND A FEW MORE OF THOSE FLAKES FLYING AROUND. IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE OUT AND ABOUT BETWEEN UNIONTOWN AND OHIOPYLE VERY EARLY THIS MORNING. BUT LOOKING UPSTREAM, SOME LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS ALREADY KICKING OFF FOR OUR FRIENDS OVER INTO EASTERN OHIO, THEY ARE GOING TO BE DRIFTING CLOSER TO US AS WE GO THROUGH THE START OF THIS MORNING. SNOW IS ABOUT TO PICK UP AROUND YOUNGSTOWN THAT EVENTUALLY WILL BE MOVING INTO AREAS LIKE MERCER. ALSO LAWRENCE COUNTY. SO I’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THAT BAND AS WE WORK THROUGH THE START OF THE DAY. AND AGAIN, IT’S ALL GOING TO BE LOCATION DEPENDENT. THIS STILL IS A RATHER LAKE EFFECT SET UP, AS WE’LL TRACK THAT BAND THROUGH THIS MORNING. IF YOU ARE HEADING OUT TO STATE COLLEGE FOR THE PENN STATE PLAYOFF GAME. ALSO KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE SOME FLAKES FLYING ACROSS CENTRAL PA AS WELL. THIS MORNING. LOOKING OVER THE NEXT 12 HOURS, IT’S GOING TO BE COLD. TEMPERATURES WILL BE TRAPPED IN THE 20S. FOR MOST OF US. THE BREEZE KICKS UP INTO THIS AFTERNOON, SO THAT’S GOING TO DRAG THE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURE INTO THE MID TO UPPER TEENS. AND AGAIN, IT IS GOING TO STAY COLD FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. SO JUST HOW MUCH SNOW WE SEE OUT OF THOSE SNOW SHOWERS TODAY. NOT EXPECTING A WHOLE LOT. IN FACT, SOME AREAS IF YOU DO HAPPEN TO SEE SOME OF THAT SNOW STICKING, MORE THAN LIKELY WILL BE MEASURING UNDER ADDITIONAL HALF AN INCH. AND A LOT OF THAT IS GOING TO BE NORTH OF THE CITY, EVEN EXTENDING OVER INTO THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS. WE CONTINUE ON THROUGH THE WEEKEND, WAKING UP TOMORROW IN THE TEENS IT WILL BE BRIGHTER BUT STILL COLD 27 FOR A HIGH. AND THEN FINALLY WE CRACK THAT FREEZING MARK AS WE GO THROUGH YOUR MONDAY AFTERNOON. A LITTLE BIT OF A CLOSER LOOK AT THAT LAKE EFFECT BAND AGAIN, COMING IN OUT OF THE NORTHWEST AS WE GO THROUGH THE START OF THE DAY, THEY SHOULD BE DROPPING CLOSER TO THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH INTO ABOUT NOONTIME. THEN THE BAND LOOKS TO BREAK UP SECOND HALF OF THE DAY. IF YOU DON’T CATCH ANY FLAKES, YOU WILL SEE SOME RAYS OF SUNSHINE. AS WE WORK THROUGH THIS SATURDAY, SKIES WILL CLEAR AREA WIDE AS WE GO OVERNIGHT. PART OF THE REASON WHY IT IS GOING TO BE SO COLD. WAKING UP TOMORROW. BRIGHTER FOR YOUR SUNDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE MOVES IN, BUT STILL THAT COLD AIR MASS TRAPPED IN PLACE. AND THEN AS WE WORK THROUGH THE START OF THE NEW WEEK INTO CHRISTMAS WEEK, THE PATTERN STARTS TO CHANGE. THINGS ARE STILL DRY THROUGH MONDAY. IF YOU ARE HITTING THE ROADS, BUT KEEP IN MIND WE’RE GOING TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SOME PASSING RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS, POTENTIALLY MONDAY NIGHT INTO CHRISTMAS EVE. TO YOUR 4-DAY PLUS 4 MORE FORECAST AGAIN. BACK ABOVE FREEZING ON MONDAY CHRISTMAS EVE FEATURING THAT RAIN AND SNOW SHOWER. CHANCE LOOKS TO BE EARLY IN THE DAY. THEN FOR CHRISTMAS DAY, THE FIRST NIGHT OF HANUKKAH, TEMPERATURES AGAIN, LOWER 40S FOR US. WE’LL KEEP OUR SKIES MOSTLY CLOUDY AS TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO TICK UP. AS WE LOOK TOWARDS THE FINAL WEEKEND OF 2024. IN FACT, WE COULD BE CLOSER TO 50 DEGREES NEXT WEEKEND. WEATHER LOOKING A LOT BETTER FOR THE STEELERS CHIEFS MATCHUP. IT’S GOING TO BE A COLD ONE DOWN IN BALTIMORE TODAY, THOUGH. YEAH BUNDLE UP IF YOU’RE IN BALTIMORE WATCHING THE GAME. AND EVEN IF YOU’RE GOING OUT YOU’

A few flakes cross western PA today.

Today is the Winter Solstice with winter officially beginning at 4:20 AM. A chill is blowing in to “celebrate.” Highs today will struggle to reach 30 degrees; it will be a touch colder tomorrow. Tracking a narrow band of lake enhanced snow that will drift into the area later this morning. Not everyone will see snow today, but those that do could pick up a quick light accumulation. Outside of this narrow band of snow, there will be breaks for sunshine. We have a couple of cold nights ahead with lows in the teens. Temperatures look to finally crack the freezing mark Monday afternoon. Trending milder for Christmas week with highs in the 40s. Watching a system that could bring a little rain and snow on Christmas Eve. The timing still needs to be sorted out. Christmas Day looks to be dry with mostly cloudy skies and a high around 40 degrees.TODAY: Cold and breezy, sun and clouds with isolated flakes. High: 29°.TONIGHT: Partly cloudy and quite cold. Low: 18°.TOMORROW: Brighter and not as breezy but still cold. High: 27°, low: 16°.
