CNN commentator Shermichael Singleton spoke with author Jay Michaelson about the importance of culture war issues in the election of President-elect Trump. The exchange highlighted deep disagreement over what caused Kamala Harris' loss and over ads targeting biological boys in women's sports.

“I think there are a lot of families who don't believe boys should play sports like girls,” Singleton said, opening a debate about the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports.

“They’re not boys,” Michaelson said in response to Singleton’s comment. “I’m not going to listen to transphobia at this table.”

“When you use a word that is an insult, I will interrupt you!” Michaelson added. “They're not boys. They're not playing girls' softball. I'm not going to sit here and listen to that.”

“Let's sort things out for a second because, look, this is a really hot topic. And Shermichael, I know you, I know you understand that people have different views on this. I think, out of respect for Jay, let's try to talk about it in a respectful way.

“I know you don’t mean to be transphobic,” CNN anchor Abby Phillip told Singleton.

Regarding Trump campaign ads featuring 2020's Kamala Harris expressing support for gender-affirming care for trans people in prison, Singleton said, “Those ads were so effective… What I mean in terms of efficiency, regular people with kids look at these things, and they say, “You know what? It's a little too far. I disagree with this, I think the Democrats have gone way too far left on social issues. It makes them uncomfortable… You may not agree with this reality, but that's why Republicans have continued to run these ads, over and over again. »

“They’re not ordinary people,” Michaelson responded. “There's no consensus that these are actually boys. This whole thing about trans girls is a canard. We're talking about a tiny part of the population.”
