Tim Burton's latest film, Beetlejuice, has released its Rotten Tomatoes critic score. It debuted at 78%. At the time of writing, there were 40 reviews.

The previous film, “Beetlejuice” (1988), had a critic score of 82% and an audience score of 82%. It will be interesting to see how much the audience score increases after the film is released in the US on September 6, 2024 (it will be released in Japan on September 27).

Positive reviews of Beetlejuice have noted that it successfully recreates the appeal of the original that made it so beloved by fans, with comments such as “it retains an impeccable sense of story without relying too heavily on digital effects” (Dexetro) and “a love letter to the beloved classic, rendered in his trademark visual style” (Film Ireland Magazine).

On the other hand, negative reviews include comments such as “Its ability to tell a coherent story is highly questionable” (Independent) and “A good nostalgia stunt, but weak and clumsy” (Guardian).

The original Beetlejuice is a cult hit created by Tim Burton at the tender age of 30. Burton has spoken of his passion for the sequel, saying, “I didn't want to make a big sequel for money, I wanted to make it for very personal reasons.” The sequel plan had been floating around for over 30 years, but the catalyst for the project was the Netflix drama Wednesday, in which Burton is executive producer and director and stars Jenna Ortega. He said he was “reinvigorated” by the fun of filming the show and meeting Ortega.

The film “Beetlejuice: Beetlejuice” will be released in theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024.
