After Twisters, Glen Powell to star in Backdraft remake

Released in 1991, Ron Howard's film brought together a five-star cast with Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Donald Sutherland and even Robert De Niro.

Hollywood's new darling, Glen Powell has also definitely become the king of remakes and sequels. After a figurative debut in the 2000s, and an appearance in Expendables 3 which he shares the bill with Sly, Black And Harrison Ford In 2014, the thirty-five-year-old actor burst onto the screen alongside Tom Cruise In Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. And then there is the Twisters of Lee Isaac Chungcurrently in theaters, in which he pays homage to Bill Paxton.

Glen Powell knows how to follow in the footsteps of his elders. He will also be starring in the remake of Running Man by Edgar Wrightfilming from the end of the year. And it's not over: the actor from Everything but you will also carry the remake of Backdraftannounced on CNBC by the producer Brian Grazeralso at the helm of the original film directed by Ron Howard.

Released in 1991, this action-packed film saw a crack team from the CFD (Chicago Fire Department) investigate mysterious fires. The cast includes: Kurt Russell (in the lead role that Glen Powell will reprise), William Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca De Mornay, Donald Sutherland And Robert De Niro.

Critical success with three Oscar nominations for Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects Editing – lost to the second part of Terminator– Backdraft has had mixed public success with a cumulative gross of 152 million dollars (for a budget of 100 million). It nevertheless remains a cult film, which has the right to an attraction at Universal Studios in Hollywood (since closed) and to a sequel in 2019 by the Spanish director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallegowith Joe Anderson in the lead role, and the return of William Baldwin And Donald Sutherland.

A remake which is part of a recycling trend which benefits Glen Powell and which Brian Grazer comments on in these terms:

“These formats from the late 90s and 2000s have become very important because broadcasters or studios are even more risk-averse today. They like brands that are already established and that people know well, to which they add a little extra or a really interesting cast, which of course we do with our films.”

The producer has not announced any other cast members or a director for the remake. Perhaps Glen Powell will have the luxury of working with some of the original cast members, despite Donald Sutherland's recent passing?

No release date has been announced either, nor any official synopsis.
