They should have collaborated on Babylon, but the star left his place to Brad Pitt… this time, is it the right one?
Following the flop of Babylon in theaters (except in France where it received a great critical reception and attracted 1.5 million spectators), Damien Chazelle expressed fears: will he manage to raise a substantial budget for his next film? Last April, the director of La La Land revealed that it had signed an agreement with Paramount for film a story set in a prison. A way for the studio to renew its confidence in him, even if his work in homage to the golden age of Hollywood caused them to lose tens of millions of dollars.
The film was described as “a mid-budget drama” with “action elements” and he was supposed to shoot it in the fall, but since then, no news… At the end of the year, we certainly understand the reason for this stand by: the filmmaker explained to Vanity Fair that he was actually working on two feature film projects, but that he did not yet know which one would be shot first.
Reporter Daniel Richtman learned a little more about the second: it would in fact bean Evel Knievel biopicstill for Paramount. Leonardo DiCaprio would be approached for the main role based on a script of William Monahan (The Departed).
Damien Chazelle – Babylon: “Life is a lot more fun when everyone likes your film”
If it happens, it would be a great way to come full circle for the star, who was initially courted by Chazelle for the role ultimately played by Brad Pitt in Babylon. Having had to give up for scheduling reasons, Leo would play here the famous American stuntman, to whom his favorite director, Martin Scorsesealso wanted to make a biopic, almost ten years ago. As famous for his spectacular motorcycle jumps as his bad temper, Evel Knievel (1938-2007) entered the Guiness Book of Records as “the man with the most broken bones in a lifetime”officially 433 fractures recorded during his career.
Career that he ruined by attacking a man with a baseball bat in 1977, following the publication of an unflattering book about him. Knievel spent six months in prison, lost all his support and contracts, before making a comeback in the 1990s.
A controversial personality, therefore, who partly inspired Quentin Tarantino for his character of Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood : to imagine the stunt double for movie star Rick Dalton (played by DiCaprio), the filmmaker drew in particular on the 1971 film retracing his life, Evel Knievelwith George Hamilton.
