A little snow, a lot more cold this week for the Pittsburgh area
Impact Days Tuesday and Wednesday for dangerously cold wind chills.
WOO! WELL, HOPEFULLY THE PENS CAN PULL OUT A WIN BECAUSE WE NEED SOME POSITIVITY. THAT’S RIGHT. NOT JUST IN THE SPORTS WORLD BUT ALSO IN THE WEATHER TOO. IT’S BEEN SO COLD OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. IT REALLY HAS. I HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU. THERE’S MORE TO COME, BUT LET’S FOCUS ON THESE LITTLE VICTORIES, AT LEAST OVER THE NEXT 48 HOURS, LET’S SAY. TEMPERATURES NOT TOO SHABBY HERE THIS MORNING. WE’RE WAKING UP ANYWHERE FROM AS COLD AS 11 RIGHT NOW IN WAYNESBURG. ABOUT TEN DEGREES WARMER HERE IN THE CITY. AND FOR UNIONTOWN, CLARION. YOU’VE GOT 23 HERE AS WE GET THE DAY UNDERWAY. STARTING TO NOTICE A LITTLE BIT OF DAYLIGHT SHOWING UP, STILL ILLUMINATING. LOTS OF CLOUDS, THOUGH OVER DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH. AND OCCASIONALLY WE’LL SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE PEEKING THROUGH THOSE STUBBORN CLOUDS. ALL IN ALL, A PRETTY TYPICAL JANUARY DAY FOR WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. WE’VE GOT CLOUDS. WE’VE GOT CHILLY TEMPERATURES. NOT MUCH SNOW, THOUGH, BUT THAT WILL BE CHANGING AS WE WORK THROUGH TOMORROW MORNING. LET’S SPEED AHEAD INTO THIS EVENING ON FUTURECAST. TEMPERATURES WILL BE SETTLING DOWN INTO THE LOWER 20S IN MOST CASES. AS WE APPROACH MIDNIGHT OR SO. THERE COULD BE A FEW PASSING SNOW SHOWERS CLOSER TO I-80 THAT ZIPS THROUGH. WE’LL WAIT UNTIL DAYBREAK TOMORROW. AS YOU’RE HEADING OUT THE DOOR TOMORROW FOR MORE FLURRIES AND EVEN LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS. A LOT OF THAT COMING THROUGH IN THE MATTER OF JUST A COUPLE OF HOURS EXITING BEFORE LUNCH TIME. JUST GIVEN THE SPEED OF THIS SYSTEM, NOT EXPECTING A WHOLE LOT OF ACCUMULATION, BUT BEHIND THE FRONT, TEMPERATURES WILL START TO DROP. IN FACT, WE’LL HIT OUR HIGH AROUND MIDDAY TOMORROW, SO HIGHS CREEPING CLOSER TO THE FREEZING MARK TODAY AND TOMORROW. IN TERMS OF THE SNOWFALL FORECAST. TOMORROW, NOT EXPECTING A WHOLE LOT, BUT EVEN STILL ABOUT A HALF INCH. STARTING TO ARRIVE AROUND THE MORNING. COMMUTE COULD SLOW THINGS DOWN ON THE ROADS. LEAD TO SOME SLICK CONDITIONS AS WELL. IT WILL BE NORTH OF 422 APPROACHING I-80, ALSO THROUGH THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS, WHERE YOU MAY SEE ADDITIONAL INCH OF SNOW TOMORROW. MAIN FOCUS OF THE WEEK AHEAD, THOUGH TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. BOTH DAYS ARE IMPACT DAYS. HIGH TEMPERATURES. YOU’LL NOTICE ONLY IN THE TEENS. AS IF THAT WASN’T COLD ENOUGH, WE’RE ALSO PREPARING FOR AN ARCTIC BLAST THAT IS GOING TO BE WORKING IN MAKING THOSE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES EVEN FEEL COLDER. SO TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL BE IMPACT DAYS, AND THAT VERY COLD AIR, FOLLOWED UP BY SOME WIND GUSTS THAT COULD BE 25 TO EVEN 30MPH. THAT WILL LEAD TO FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES, ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING. THAT COULD BE CLOSE TO ZERO IF NOT AS COLD AS TEN BELOW. AND WHEN WE GET INTO THAT RANGE, AS WE COULD SEE, A COLD WEATHER ADVISORY ISSUED. BEST CHANCE FOR THAT WOULD BE THROUGH THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS. LET’S GO AHEAD TO EARLY IN THE MORNING ON TUESDAY. AGAIN, THOSE SUBZERO FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES NOT GOING TO GET MUCH BETTER AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY. SO TO KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE, PLAN ADDRESSING ALL THOSE WARM LAYERS, GRAB THE WINTER ACCESSORIES INCLUDING THE HAT, MITTENS, SCARF AS WELL. AGAIN, FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES ONLY IN THE SINGLE DIGITS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. IT GETS EVEN COLDER OVERNIGHT, WAKING UP WEDNESDAY AGAIN. SOME OF THOSE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES FROM GREENSBURG TO UNIONTOWN, WASHINGTON. WAYNESBORO, CERTAINLY SOMERSET, AND EVEN FARTHER TOWARDS THE NORTH COULD BE AROUND TEN BELOW. SO WE COULD SEE THAT COLD WEATHER ADVISORY ONE MORE MORNING IN THE SINGLE DIGITS. THAT’S GOING TO BE THURSDAY, WHERE WE COULD SEE A FEW MORE FLURRIES. BUT AS WE CONTINUE ON WITH YOUR 4-DAY PLUS 4 MORE FORECAST BACK ABOVE FREEZING, IN FACT, EVEN WARMING CLOSER TO 40 BY THE TIME SATURDAY GETS HERE, THAT WILL BE OUR NEXT OPPORTUNITY FOR A DECENT AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION. GIVEN THE TEMPERATURES, MOST OF US WILL SEE RAIN THOUGH, SO THAT’S GOING TO REALLY START TO MELT SOME OF THE SNOW AS WE GO THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEKEND. SO WE’LL WATCH THAT, BUT DOES LOOK LIKE MORE COLD AIR COMES IN. THAT REALLY HAS BEEN A THEME HERE IN JANUARY AND YOU SHOULD EXPECT IT. BUT STILL, IT’S SOMETHING TO MONITOR OVER THE COMING DAYS. WELL, WE’VE BEEN SAYING IT ALL WEEKEND, BUT WE WERE SO SPOILED THAT IT REALLY FEELS EXTRA COLD. IT KIND OF DOES. RIGHT? IT’S IT’S KIND OF RUDE COLD OVER THE NEXT
A little snow, a lot more cold this week for the Pittsburgh area
Impact Days Tuesday and Wednesday for dangerously cold wind chills.
The weekend ends on a fairly “typical” note for western PA with limited sunshine and chilly temperatures. Highs will climb into the lower 30s for most of the areas. This is only a temporary bump in temperature, we will fall deeper into the Arctic air this week.A little snow MondayA new system will zip through western Pennsylvania to kick off the work and school. The flakes arrive as early as midnight for areas close to I-80. The rest of the region can expect flurries and a few passing snow showers as early as 5 AM or 6 AM. Slick conditions may develop during the morning commute. Accumulations will be around half an inch for most; the I-80 corridor and the Laurel Highlands could pick up closer to an inch. The snow activity will shut down during the afternoon.Reinforcing cold air & Impact Days mid-weekThe bigger weather story for the upcoming week will be more cold, which could turn dangerous. Tuesday and Wednesday are both Impact Days for wind chills that could be as low as zero, if not below zero. Dress in warm layers and don’t forget the winter accessories too.We will feel the brunt of this frigid air on Tuesday, especially as the wind picks up and gusts between 25 and 30 mph. The wind will ease up but temperatures will remain bitterly cold on Wednesday. A Cold Weather Advisory may be issued for the Laurel Highlands, where wind chills could be in the -10° range.4Day Plus 4 More: A slight thawTemperatures will begin thawing later in the week. By Friday highs could top off in the lower and mid 30s. We are watching another system that could cross western Pennsylvania on Saturday. This storm will usher in milder air so it looks like mostly rain will fall. There are still some disagreements on the system’s path so this forecast will need some fine tuning.TODAY: Limited sunshine and chilly. High: 31°.TONIGHT: Cloudy with flurries and a few snow showers after midnight. Low: 25°.MONDAY: Flurries and a few morning snow showers. High: 32°, low: 10°.TUESDAY – Impact Day: Frigid and blustery with wind chills near or below zero. High: 16°, low: 8°.
