Peace has returned to Westeros. As George RR Martin recently lit the spark of a disagreement with Ryan Condal, the showrunner of House of the Dragonregarding the absence of a crucial character in season 2 and the heavy consequences that this would have for the future, the latter gave a more enthusiastic speech regarding the new spin-off of the parent series. Asked by The Hollywood Reporter for an article reviewing the challenges encountered by House of the Dragon and his rival The Rings of Powerthe author covered the embers of his last statements with praise for the new upcoming series:
“I went to the set in Northern Ireland in July and loved what I saw. The cast is great. Dunk and Egg are like they came straight out of the pages of my novel. Readers will love them. I love them, at least. Ira Parker, the showrunner, is doing a fantastic job.”
Adapted from Chronicles of the Knight Errantitself bringing together a collection of short stories, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms traces the adventures of Ser Duncan and his squire Egg (real name Aegon V Targaryen, direct descendant of Rhaenyra) crossing Westeros in search of exploits to accomplish. At this time located halfway between House of the Dragon And Game of Thronesa hundred years apart, the dragon dynasty reigns and the people remember the last winged creature flying above their heads.
According to the author, Dunk, played by the former Irish rugby player Peter Claffeyand Egg, played by the young Dexter Sol Ansell (Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird), would therefore be exact copies of those imagined in the novel. A video published last month by Max gives us a first glimpse of the visual of the series.
Last May, Martin explained on his personal blog that this spin-off would have a different tone from its predecessors: “But this is still Westeros, so no one is safe.“, he added all the same. Understand, there will still be surprises, and deaths.
Also present in the casting will be: Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Egg's brother, Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel (Tea Crown) in that of Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things), Daniel Ings (Sex Education) who will play Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Sam Spruell (Minesweepers, Cartel) who will play Maeka Targaryen. Recent arrivals include Steven Calvert, Abigail O'Regan and Rowan Robinson (Mystery in Venice).
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to be released in June 2025. After it, other spin-off series will follow, including 10,000 Ships returning to the conquest of Dorne by Princess Nymeria, and a third concerning the conquest of Westeros by Aegon and his sisters.
