Steven Spielberg will have offered him his last gesture of cinema. In The Fabelmansan autobiographical film where he recounted his childhood and how he fell in love with the 7th art, Spielby went out David Lynch from his retirement to play John Ford in a scene made even more legendary by the death of the director of Mulholland Drive.
After unsuccessfully trying to contact Lynch through his agent, Spielberg went through Laura Dern, who worked with both filmmakers (on Jurassic Park and Sailor and Lula) and convinced him to take the test.
“At first I didn't want to do it“, said Lynch, who finally accepted, a few months after the film's release. “I'm sure John Ford had a lot of advice to give to young directors. Steven chose this example of the skyline. Which he was right about. Filming the skyline in the middle is boring like rain.”
Today, David Lynch is no longer with us. And Spielberg was quick to release a statement (via Variety) to pay tribute to the immense director, whose death we learned this Thursday at the age of 78.
“I loved David's films. Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive And Elephant Man defined him as a singular dreamer and visionary who made films that appeared to be handmade. I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes, David Lynch, playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and looked like a scene from a David movie. The world will miss his original and unique style. His films have already stood the test of time, and they will continue to do so.”
David Lynch leaves a big void, and like Spielberg the editorial staff of Première is inconsolable.
