Mount Lebanon store amongst others out of rock salt as cold snap continues
As Pittsburgh faces a cold snap, residents are finding it increasingly difficult to secure essential winter supplies. Many Pittsburghers on the search for salt Wednesday were disappointed when they came to Rollier’s in Mt. Lebanon and saw a sign on the door telling them that there’s none left.Derek Satterfield, owner of Rollier’s in Mount Lebanon, explained the situation: “Just last week, we had ten pallets of goods. We were limiting how many people buy, so it was helping to spread the wealth a little bit. It lasted for two and a half days.” Satterfield said the demand has outpaced supply, with customers limited to one bag each.”I’m fresh out of salt. Which is never a good thing when it’s going to do this every other day,” said Matt Meehan from Brookline, who stopped at multiple stores looking for salt.Satterfield added, “Demand has been so high, actually, from the main distributor of this product, from Safe Step brand and Compass Minerals here. I think their warehouse is really close to us. They’ve been so busy. Our orders been on, been there for a week. They haven’t even, our truck they finally were able to pick up today.” He said he expects more shipments in the coming days.In addition to salt, other popular items at the local hardware store include space heaters, shovels, car scrapers, and windshield wiper fluid. These items have been crucial for drivers, especially in Westmoreland County, where roads were not fully treated until today.”It was pretty slushy. Yeah. Coming down really hard. Yeah, it was pretty heavy,” said Emily Bulger from North Huntingdon.”I slid down 30 going towards the Walmart and Green Gate and almost went down the entire hill without stopping. So, yeah, it was pretty bad,” said Andrew Swauger from Irwin.
