A character imagined by Hwang Dong-hyukthe creator of Squid Gamewhich explains why he named him Thanos, after the big villain of the Avengers and the Marvel saga (played by Josh Brolin). The South Korean candidate also cultivates a certain resemblance to the purple Titan, after having dyed his hair and painted his nails like Infinity Stones.
“The reason why I named this character Thanos is precisely because this name doesn't really suit a rapper !” laughs Hwang Dong-hyuk in an interview for Netflix. “It's a bit ridiculous and at the same time, it made him a character that fans around the world could identify with, love. I'm glad it's so popular.“
Even though in Korea, the actor's casting Choi Seung-hyun made people talk. Because the interpreter of this Thanos has a personal past linked to a drug scandal: “As you may know, actor Seung-hyun was involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea about nine years ago and hasn't acted since. He hasn't acted in anything in the last nine years in Korea” confides Hwang in an interview with PEOPLE, applauding the courage of Choi, who was willing to confront his own troubled past by accepting this role. “I have the impression that it took a lot of courage for him, in a way, to embody this character with whom he shares a lot of similarities which are quite negative for him on a personal level… And I find that 'he played that very impressively!“
