What will the new part look like? What awaits #456? And how can we bring down the organization behind the games? Decryption with the team of the Netflix event series.
Same player, play again! Gi-hun leaves in the Squid Gamefor season 2 of the Netflix event series. The global phenomenon is putting a piece back into the buzz machine this week with new games and the direct continuation of the story. Because we are going to find the famous n°456 of Squid Game. After winning the game at the end of season 1, Gi-hun had the opportunity to leave, find his daughter in the United States, with his billions of Wons in his pocket. But he turned around just before boarding.
The actor Lee Jung-Jae explains this turnaround which marked the finale: “He decides to stay in South Korea and not go to Los Angeles because it's a choice of the heart. It's his conscience that dictates that to him. He knows that all the money he has collected by winning is stained with the blood of the candidates who died during the game against him. He will never be able to enjoy this fortune, be happy with his winnings.“
Money therefore does not bring happiness to Gi-hun who decides, at the start of season 2, to use his enormous resources to track down those who murder with impunity on this island. Lee Jung-Jae summary :
“He returns with the absolute determination to avenge everyone by destroying the Squid Game.”
Above all, the Korean actor assures us that his character has evolved a lot since season 1: “Gi-hun changes a lot in season 2. He was this jovial, optimistic guy. But not anymore (…) Director Hwang (Hwang Dong-hyeokcreator and author of the entire series) really succeeded in developing a very keen moral sense in Gi-hun. He will even team up with Jun-ho, the cop we see in season 1, to stop the organization behind the Squid Games. Together, they share this same goal.”
Because Jun-ho will be alive and well at the start of season 2. Even if he was shot in season 1 by the boss, this “Front Man” – who is none other than his brother – policeman will be there in the future. “I was surprised when Director Hwang called me to tell me that Jun-ho was still alive.”tells us Wi Ha-joon who didn't expect to come back. He says that his character returns to service with a specific mission: “Since he knows his brother is the mastermind behind the Squid Gamehe is obsessed with understanding why he does this. Why did he become this dangerous man. He will therefore team up with Gi-hun to defeat the Front Man.”
The series will thus literally remove the mask of the person who hid his identity behind this metallic artifice. The actor Lee Byung-Hunwho plays the big bad of Squid Gametells us: “In season 2, the Front Man suddenly becomes one of the central characters of the series. We will discover his personal history, his past, his relationship with his brother, and why he became this leader of the Squid Game. He's not a born evil sociopath. There is always a reason for evil. His environment, his experience brought him there…”
We will therefore discover what pushed the Front Man to take control of this sordid enterprise. And of course, this will involve running a few new games… and their participants. New sordid ordeals await candidates for the 4.56 billion Wons. But the series will dig deeper than this bloodthirsty spectacle. “Because there is no longer the element of surprise in season 2. We can no longer rely on the sole originality of the concept” confesses to us Hwang Dong-hyeok.
“So we tried to keep what worked, by injecting new elements. In particular the fact that Gi-hun is no longer this clumsy hero. He is no longer the slightly lost loser of season 1. He survived at the Squid Game, he became aware of many things and he is now fueled by a need for revenge. By this obsession with stopping the games. Will he succeed?
See you on December 26 on Netflix to get the beginning of an answer with season 2 of Squid Game. The end of the series is already set for season 3.
