Sonic 3 speeds up Mufasa at the US box office

The Lion King prequel crashes in big ways.

If the American box office is a jungle, the king of the weekend is not a lion, but a hedgehog. With $62 million in revenue, Sonic 3 easily won his duel against Mufasa: The Lion Kingwhich only brought in 35 million greenbacks.

Supported by positive reviews, the third part of the saga Sonic starts a little worse than the previous film released in 2022 (72 million), but a little above predictions which placed it below the 60 million mark. And the boss of Paramount, quoted by Varietyis confident for the future: “Sonic will continue to dominate during the holidays“. Sonic 4 is already in the pipeline.

For Disney, on the other hand, it's a grimace soup. Announced around 50 million, Mufasa did even worse than expected for its first weekend of operation. A score very, very far from the 191.8 million for Jon Favreau's remake, released in 2019. Barry Jenkins' film is catching up a little internationally (122 million in total worldwide), but it cost 200 million to produce, plus around 100 million in marketing, and will have to perform over time to hope to be repaid.

During this time, Wicked stands up tremendously to Moana 2with 13.5 million dollars earned by the prequel to Wizard of Oz this weekend, for a total of 383 million. The animated film has grossed 359 million in the United States, and 790 million worldwide. The continuation of Moana could be the 3rd Disney film released in 2024 to cross the billion mark (after Vice-Versa 2 And Deadpool & Wolverine).

In 5th place in the ranking, the indie studio to which we owe Sound of Freedom has succeeded again with Homestead. This low-budget post-app film raked in $6 million from fewer than 2,000 screens. Enough to get ahead Gladiator 2which earned less than 5 million for its 5th week. Ridley Scott's film grossed 416 million worldwide, but it was a failure considering its colossal budget (250 million).

And Kraven in all this? After his disastrous start, the hunter played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson continues to do worse than Madame Webwhich remained in 4th place during its second weekend. Relegated to 7th place, JC Chandor's film only earned 3 million, a drop of 72% which confirms that the public has lost all interest in the Sony universe created around the antagonists of Spider-Man.
