The director of American Honey injects poetry into her social cinema.
After signing season 2 of Big Little Lies and a documentary (Cow), Andrea Arnold made her big return to Cannes last May, with Bird. This touching portrait of a 12-year-old girl (Bailey, played by Nykiya Adams) left empty-handed, but its poetry and the hint of fantasy injected by the British director into her social cinema was undoubtedly one of the moments of grace of the competition.
Barry Keoghan plays the badass dad of this lost kid and her brother Hunt. All these beautiful people live in a squat in north Kent, and Bailey leaves to seek attention elsewhere when she learns that he is getting married again. On her way she finds the mysterious Bird (played by the always brilliant Franz Rogowski). A providential encounter which will accompany him in this key moment of his life.
Bird will be released in France on January 1, 2025. Trailer:
