$52 million in 4,200 North American theaters. For its second weekend of release, Moana 2 continues to do well at the US box office. The drop in attendance is significant (-63%) compared to its launch weekend, for Thanksgiving. But according to Disney, Moana 2 still achieved the biggest post-Thanksgiving weekend in history, surpassing the benchmark set by Frozen 2 ($35.2 million in 2019).
In any case, the new adventure in Polynesia is a huge success, grossing $300 million in the United States and already more than $600 million worldwide after two weeks. There is no doubt that the sequel will do much better than the first part ($643 million in the end in 2016). On the other hand, Moana 2 is behind the passage times of Vice-Versa 2. The biggest hit of 2024 had already largely crossed $700 million after two weeks this summer. But Moana 2 could experience a new boost during the Christmas holidays.
The fight will be tight in the theaters with Wicked. The musical continues to do very well with $35 million from 3,885 theaters in its third weekend. The film adapted from Broadway has already gleaned $320.5 million across the Atlantic. It's more complicated in the rest of the world, where the musical is much less known. Wicked currently totals $455 million overall.
Reverse situation for Gladiator IIvisibly more anticipated abroad than in the United States. The continuation of Ridley Scott remains on the podium but with a small 12.4 million dollars in 3,885 theaters. The peplum is already reaching its limits across the Atlantic, while it has accumulated 133 million dollars in its country. Fortunately, Gladiator 2 is a hit internationally, which allows it to pass 350 million dollars in global revenue.
Note that the only release of the week in the USA is the horror comedy Y2Kfrom studio A24, with Rachel Zegler (no date yet in France). The film debuted in eighth place with a disappointing $2.1 million in 2,108 theaters. It's one of the worst debuts of the year in the United States for a film that was screened in more than 2,000 theaters.
