The 4th channel of the PAF will disappear. The group will now bet everything on MyCanal.

Soon, Canal Plus will no longer be a television channel, but a pure and simple platform.

The group Canal + announced this week that it was going to delete, on June 6, 2025, all its pay channels from TNT, namely the channel Canal +but also its versions Canal+ Cinéma, Canal+ Sport and Planète. A strong symbol, at the end of 2024, when the encrypted channel is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Launched on November 4, 1984, revolutionized the French audiovisual landscape at the time. In 2024, Canal + adapts to the times and changing habits of viewers, by becoming a 100% streaming platform, like its main competitors which are today called Netflix or Disney Plus.

Officially, it is the suppression of C8decided by Arcom in July 2024, which motivates this decision, the group explaining in “draw the consequences“and abandoning the traditional distribution channels, which he considers to be”an increasingly restrictive tax and regulatory environment“, to focus on a strategy of platformization via its offer MyCanal. Concretely, the company led by Maxime Saada will still keep two channels on TNT: its music channel CStar and of course CNewsits news channel with a certain influence.

If Canal + disappears in this way, the switch will be painless for most subscribers. Indeed, among the approximately 10 million French people subscribing to encrypted channels, just under 100,000 are via TNT!

And then next week, the Vivendi group must split into four independent entities, including the company Canal +which would then be listed on the London Stock Exchange from December 16…

We imagine that the group made its calculations before making its decision. In any case, 40 years after its appearance in the PAF, Canal + should disappear from the 4th French television channel. It remains to be seen what will be there instead.
