Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

“Harley Quinn likes to mix and match her clothes, she doesn't mind wearing sweatpants with sequins. She thinks glamor and comfort. Since she's always the center of attention, it must show in her clothes. But she wants to remain completely free in her movements. She can wear boots if they are very comfortable. Trust me, we tested running with it (Laughs.) Margot Robbie worked with me a lot during the design. She described the character to me: she can steal anything and wear it, she is attracted to anything that sparkles, and she likes to customize her clothes. For example, she paints her own shorts. She's a girl who always seems cool and doesn't seem to give a damn about the world around her. That's what makes her so magnetic. His “bail tape” jacket (this yellow ribbon that the American police places around crime scenes, Editor’s note) shows you straight away that he is a profoundly anarchic character. It's do it yourself: Oo was able to play with the metallic fringes and the yellow ribbon to send this message: 'I'm fun, but don't try to do it the other way around'. »

Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor)

“Always impeccably chic. He likes to dress for all occasions, whether it's an out-of-town meeting or entertaining at home. He has an incredible collection of pajamas (Laughs.) He loves everything that others can't have, unique items. He is the same with his clothes and is ahead of fashion. As also seen in the nightclub he owns, I had to find fabrics that would work well in these fairly dark interior shots. At one point he wears a blue/green velvet suit that catches the light perfectly. »

Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell)

“She's a city survivor, a sultry singer by night and all business by day. The kind of girl who doesn't need to buy big brands to look very well dressed. We took inspiration from her character from the comics here and there, like for her fishnet tights and her colors – there are many reminders of black and blue or yellow and black. A lot of the clothes she wears are a mix of vintage and modern. »

Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)

“She always dresses functionally. But her high-tech clothes are tailor-made, just for her. We took a lot of inspiration from the character in the comics, especially for the color palette – black, purple and silver. She's always supposed to be in the background, hidden, so we needed some little elements that glow when the scene takes place at night so the viewer can spot her… but not so much that it distracts. At one point in the film, Huntress has to slide down a slide, but with the pants we made for her, she stuck and wouldn't go down! So we had to find a completely different fabric and make it look as close to the original as we could. There are many challenges of this type in this profession. We have to adapt.”

The outfit makes the monk look good for Margot Robbie, Mary-Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett…

After working on Drive (Ryan Gosling's scorpion jacket ? It's her) A Star is Born, Midnight Special, Loving, Lost River Or The Place Beyond the Pinescostume designer Erin Benach tackled her first superheroic film in 2020. She then explained in First how were the clothes of the main characters of Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Story of Harley Quinnto be seen again this evening on TMC. The editorial team recommends this comic book adaptation “spicy”which is inspired by the cinema of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn.

We share the words of her costume designer in the form of a slideshow, to properly present each look. And below, you can find other interviews with the members of the team: Margot Robbie (actress and producer of this spin-off of Suicide Squad) and Ewan McGregor, who plays the adversary of the group of superheroines, Black Mask. As well asa tour of his filming commented by its director, Cathy Yan.
