Knightley now looks back on “Pirates of the Caribbean'' as “both the thing that made me and the thing that broke me.'' “I was criticized[for my role]but because the series was a hit, I was able to appear in a movie that was nominated for an Academy Award.For me, it's the most successful movie, and the reason why it gets the most criticism. But it's also a very confusing existence.”

Incidentally, Knightley previously ruled out returning to the series in 2023, saying, “She (Elizabeth) set sail in style and sailed away in great shape.”
