“It’s something we knew we would do from the beginning…”
The black flag has been raised at the Pogues. The final episode of Season 4, Part 2, “The Blue Crown,” did the unthinkable by killing off one of the young heroes of Outer Banks. So who died and why? Warning spoilers!
In a tragic and brutal way, JJ (Rudy Pankow) was murdered by his own father, after giving him the legendary blue crown from Blackbeard's treasure, to save the life of his girlfriend Kiara. But Groff stabbed his son anyway…
“We don't know how people will react to this” confesses Shannon Burkeco-showrunner ofOuter Banksat Entertainment Weekly. “JJ is one of the most beloved characters, maybe even the most painful and emotional, but his death also makes sense given who JJ is and the risks he takes. We have been approaching this moment since a long time...”
The screenwriter explains that this death of the Pogues' young mad dog is “something we knew we would do from the beginning… We knew it, it was in his arc. The boy starts off as a child with an abusive past with his father but he's really generous, he's the type of person who does crazy things like stealing $30,000 from a drug dealer and then buying a jacuzzi for his friends with it. money. As time goes on, he becomes more and more derailed, but he is also more and more generous. It’s the yin and yang of his character. This season's arc started with him losing all his gold and in the end, making the ultimate sacrifice. We had been planning this for a long time and at some point we realized we were going to play this card this year.”
Shannon Burke goes further and concedes that his death “something free and it's done on purpose! Groff didn't need to kill him. Now JJ is completely at peace. He overcame his doubts. He was in a bad way and went around in circles for much of the season. He made a lot of bad choices that affect the group, and he makes up for it in episode 9. And we feel when he comes back [après avoir sauvé Sarah] that it is better. May a long and bright future await him with Kiara. Which makes it even more tragic.“Moreover, the producers ofOuter Banks admit to being a little afraid of the fans' reaction. “100%. It's really scary. We figured out pretty quickly that one of the Pogues was probably going to have to die, and Rudy Pankow seemed really excited that it was going to be him. We all thought it would be JJ anyway, but we hesitated a lot to do it, until the last minute…”
At the end of the final episode of season 4, John B (Chase Stokes) and Kiara manage to convince the Pogues to follow Groff to Lisbon, reclaim the crown at all costs and avenge JJ. This will therefore be the whole mission of the season 5 finale.'Outer Bankscoming soon to Netflix.
And JJ could make a final appearance there, as a farewell wink: “That's a great question…maybe? I would say it's within the realm of possibility…”
