From The Cure to NTM, the director offered big hits from the 1980s and 1990s to accompany the destiny of Jackie and Clotaire.

Since the announcement of the project, in 2021, we knew that music would have a prominent place in Love phew. By sharing the first teaser poster 3 years ago, Gilles Lellouche promised “an ultra violent musical romantic comedy“.

Love phew is not, however, a musical comedy, as one might have thought. Nor a film where dance is very present. The contemporary dance collective La Horde had worked on three choreographed sequences, but only one remains in the montage released in cinemas on October 16. The dance scene which closed the version shown at the Cannes Film Festival, where Love phew was in competition, was ultimately cut by the director.

Music, on the other hand, is at the heart of Love phewwith a very eclectic soundtrack which spans, like the story of Jackie and Clotaire, from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Lellouche also offered the services of American composer Jon Brion (Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Lady Bird…), with whom he had already worked on The Great Bathfor the original music of the film.

When we asked the filmmaker about the influences of Love phewhe cited several films to us (including Outsiders by Francis Ford Coppola), but also the music of The Cure: “There is something very melancholy about The Cure, and I wanted to pay homage to this melancholy in which adolescence infuses.”

Gilles Lellouche pulled out all the stops to treat himself to “A Forest” by The Cure, but also hits by Nas, Prince, Patrick Coutin and Daft Punk. Result, an invoice estimated at “around 750,000 euros” by producers Alain Attal and Hugo Sélignac (via BFMTV).”And again, it must have been more expensive, but little by little, there was a desire on Gilles' part to lower the sail a little so as not to make a jukebox with his film.
