“He's an incredible filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films. He deserves to tell stories…”
Banned for many years by Hollywood, Mel Gibson is now approaching his 70th birthday. And for Andrew Garfieldit's time to give him a second chance.
In an interview with People magazine, the actor The Amazing Spider-Man assures that the Oscar-winning filmmaker Braveheart “deserves to make films again“. If he never really stopped, the career of the Australian star of Mad Max foundered after an infamous drunk driving arrest in 2006, during which Mel Gibson made derogatory remarks about the Jewish people. The director was already coming off two daring and controversial films, with The passion of Christ (2004) and Apocalypto (2006) and no one wanted to bet on him after that.
It was not until 2016 that he was able to step behind the camera again to do You will not kill. a war film which will perform at the box office at 180 million dollars and will receive 6 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Director for him and another for Best Actor for Andrew Garfield !
Except that redemption never materialized in the process, which makes Garfield say today: “I learned a lot from him actually. I learned that people can heal and improve. I learned that people can change, that people can get help. I learned that everyone deserves respect”replies the American actor – eagerly awaited in Love in the present in the coming weeks – asked about his relationship with Mel Gibson.
“I believe people deserve a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance. None of us are infallible. Mel has done a lot of work on himself. And thank God. Because it is an incredible filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films He deserves to tell stories, because he has a very, very big and compassionate heart. He's the kind of director who comes out from behind the monitors, the. wet eyes. He knew when it was good and when it wasn't good. And I really trusted him. And he's a visceral storyteller, he can't help but feel everything. He’s a truly empathetic man.”
The fact remains that he hasn't directed anything for almost ten years and continues to play small roles in action films often intended for VOD like Boss Level (2021) or Bandit (2022). And more recently, he played a supporting role in the series John Wick: The Continental (2023). Mel Gibson no longer acts in big budget films or studio films in Hollywood. On the other hand, he will release his 6th film very soon: the thriller High risk flightwith Mark Wahlberg. Release scheduled for January 2025. It would have to be a great success for Mel Gibson truly deserves a second chance. And perhaps then we will be entitled to Lethal Weapon 5…
