“Maybe we don't all have the right to a second chance?” It is through this existential questioning of its main character re-convicted that we approach Brothersthe buddy movie of Max Barbakow released this Thursday on Prime Video.
Barbakow's previous comedy, Palm Springs (released in France in 2021 on Prime Video), brilliantly brought together Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti in a perfectly paced time loop. In this other duo film, Josh Brolin And Peter Dinklage in the role of two brothers (twins!) in late teenage crisis could have boosted the flavor of a somewhat classic scenario. Namely the run of two nickel-plated feet, and family reunions where we wonder while taking the road if blood ties are ultimately a strength, or a weakness.
In the role of mother, Glenn Close is also perfect as a crooner of seedy motels. Her runaway mother character has everything to be great. Upright in her cowboy boots and rifle in hand, she reunites with her two children after years of absence and makes peace with them through the karaoke hut. Unfortunately, even if we would like to believe in these slightly diverted archetypes, the rhythm without fantasy and a lazy situational comedy with drawers transforms the film into a box of tired gags.
If we look in vain for emotion, it is not that such roles do not represent a promising playground for the three veterans of comedy. But to the already very thin concept are added mechanical situations: an erotomaniac gorilla, the lies of a repentant husband, a matriarch who only hears the lure of gain… We expected more from the screenwriter Etan Cohen (the other , not Ethan!), partner in crime of Will Ferrel (Holmes & Watson Or In Prison: Instructions for use) but also author on Idiocracy Or Thunder in the tropics.
