Gilles Lellouche signs a film whose generosity sometimes plays tricks on him but ends up winning the day. A romantic kamikaze fresco.

He dreamed of it for so long… And here is finally Gilles Lellouche at the helm of this adaptation of Jackie loves Johnser OK? by Neville Thompson where the Dublin of the novel gives way to the North of France. The plot runs from the 80's to the 2000s and can be summed up in one sentence: Jackie and Clotaire, who are opposites – a studious high school student and an intrepid little thug – fall madly in love before life separates them but never, despite all the obstacles put in their way. on their way, to completely achieve their goals.

Love phew starts off with a bang and for 2 hours 45 minutes, to the rhythm of an insane soundtrack (The Cure, Prince, etc.), Lellouche never presses the brake pedal. His staging, rich in camera movements, reflects an overflowing enthusiasm for staging this story, these characters, these actors. She embraces the dream, the desire of her two heroes: to escape from the social determinism which condemns them to a narrow life. Exploding the frames, making his heart beat so hard it could implode at any moment.

There is a kamikaze panache in this gesture which often takes away everything in its path. But for this thunderous journey to work without the more intimate moments seeming irrelevant, we needed actors in tune. Intense but capable of nuances without fear of pushing the knobs all the way. Malik Frikah (stunning in his first major role) and Mallory Wanecque (The Worst), on the one hand, François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos on the other are made of this wood. They are one and the same with a filmmaker who here combines love at first sight and punches.

By Gilles Lellouche. With Malik Frikah, Mallory Wanecque, Adele Exarchopoulos… Duration 2h46. Released October 16, 2024
