Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz told attendees at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday: “We can't afford four more years of this,” sparking a wave of mockery on social media.

During his speech in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon, Walz was discussing gun violence when he was distracted by an audience member who appeared to need water. Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, stepped away from his speech to draw attention to the rally attendee.

“Things like we did in Minnesota, to strengthen background checks and red flag laws, to get guns out of there, to make a difference,” Walz described.

“And I still have my guns to go pheasant hunting in a few weeks… We need water, can we have some? [a] “Check it out?” the candidate added, pointing to the participant.

About two minutes later, the Democrat turned the focus back to the race and began criticizing former President Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance.

“I’m going to bring it home real quick, folks: Look, Kamala Harris has made it clear that these guys are out to instill fear,” Walz began. “They want to tell you that [you should] “You just have to get over it, it's a reality. That's how it is.”

“[Harris] “He simply said that things don't have to be this way,” he added. “It doesn't have to be this way. We can't afford to live through this for another four years.”

Walz then discussed Project 2025, which the Trump campaign has repeatedly disavowed.

While Walz may have been referring to gun violence or Trump's rhetoric when he spoke of “four more years” of the problem, the ambiguity of his statement led conservative commentators to criticize the Minnesota governor on social media for what appeared to be criticism of the Biden administration.

“Dude, he’s campaigning for Trump now?” wrote commentator Rita Panahi on X.

“I’m with him/Tim,” Donald Trump Jr. jokingly responded.

Trump War Room, an X-rated account run by the Trump presidential campaign, wrote: “WALZ FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH: ‘We Can’t Afford Four More Years’ of Kamala Harris.”
