WhileOnly Murders in the Building has just been renewed for a fifth season and the fourth is currently airing on Disney+, Selena Gomez, who plays Mabel, one of the three leads of the podcaster/investigator trio, revealed a plot twist on her character that she has been thinking about for a while…
Present at the Toronto Festival where Emilia Perezthe latest film by Jacques Audiard, presented at the Cannes Film Festival and for which the actress received the Best Actress Award alongside her acting partners, was screened, the young woman shared at Variety a plot idea regarding his character in the series true crime :
“I suggested that Mabel was the culprit. I don't think it'll work, but who knows? You never know.”
With Martin Short (Oliver) and Steve Martin (Charles), Selena Gomez form a trio that seems untouchable. But can her immunity protect her from being suspected or even revealed to be the ideal culprit? Isn't it said that assassins collaborate with inspectors to get as close as possible to the case? What if all this was actually just a cover to hide her crime?
During the first season and the murder of Tim Kono, the first victim of the series, Mabel was clearly identified as a suspect. She had known this man since childhood, they were friends, and then lost sight of each other following an argument. A few years before the events of the series, Tim had let the police arrest Oscar, a mutual relative, for the murder of their friend. However, he was innocent and Mabel had begged Tim to tell the truth. Which he refused.
She could have very well taken revenge. However, the denouement revealed that it was Jan Bellows – a close acquaintance of Charles. Similarly, it was she who, at the end of season 1, had found the lifeless body of Bunny Folger, chairman of the board of directors of Arconia. She was covered in blood, was arrested by the police and nicknamed “Bloody Mabel.” She was therefore one of the main suspects of season 2. Fortunately for her, for the following season and the murder of Ben (Paul Rudd), she was removed from all suspicion.
In this fourth season, Mabel, Oliver and Charles must investigate the murder of Sazz (Jane Lynch), Charles's stand-in and her friend found dead in the latter's apartment, while accepting that their podcast is adapted into a film by Hollywood studios. New stars are brought together: Eva Longaria, Eugene Levy, Zach Galafianakis as well as new residents, all potential culprits…
Only Murders in the Building has received 21 Emmy Award nominations since its creation and continues to enjoy great success with critics and audiences. While there is little chance that Mabel will be the murderer this season, there is nothing to prevent her from becoming the murderer for the next one? But for that, we will first have to wait to know the identity of the next victim, which, as usual, will certainly be revealed during the last episode of this season 4, broadcast now on Disney +.
