It has been revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021) is in negotiations to direct “Spider-Man 4” produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. The Hollywood Reporter reported.
Cretton is a filmmaker who brought a new wind to superhero movies with his “Shang-Chi” solo film, which mixed authentic kung fu action with comedy elements. He was also scheduled to direct the fifth “Avengers” movie, which was renamed “Avengers: Doomsday,” but later dropped out.
Following the blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide, the fourth Spider-Man film is expected to be just as big or even bigger than its predecessor, and if he takes on the role, it is likely to be the biggest project of Cretton's career.
There is no solid information about “Spider-Man 4,” and the filming and release schedules are unknown. It appears that the script is currently being written, and lead actor Tom Holland has cautiously expressed a positive attitude toward continuing in the role. The fact that the selection of the director is underway suggests that various preparations are being made behind the scenes.
Jon Watts, who directed the first three Spider-Man films, has left the superhero film industry since No Way Home. He previously offered practical advice to his successor, saying that it would be better to use CG rather than live-action scenes for Spider-Man's swinging scenes.
In addition to the “Shang-Chi” sequel, whose progress is uncertain, Cretton is also directing an episode of the Marvel drama “Wonder Man” starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It was originally reported that Cretton left “Avengers” 5 to focus on the “Shang-Chi” sequel and “Wonder Man”. “Wonder Man” quietly finished filming in April 2024. The fact that he has now sat down at the negotiating table for “Spider-Man 4” may be because the future of the “Shang-Chi” sequel is unclear, or it may be because the schedule has become clear.
