“I don't think there's anything fundamental missing,” justifies Matt Reeves. “We know we're in Batman's world.”

While The Batman just came out in Pathé theaters in France, to put the public back in the dark atmosphere of Gotham City just before the broadcast of its spin-off series The Penguin on Max, we learn that the superhero played by Robert Pattinson will not appear in this show. Led by Colin Farrell in Oz Cobblepot, but also Cristin Milioti or Clancy Brown, this story derived from the blockbuster released in 2022 in theaters will not feature the Dark Knight, confirms producer Matt Reeves to SFX Magazine. This one will however soon return to the big screen, the sequel to The Batman being scheduled for 2026 in theaters, still under his direction.

“I don't think there's anything fundamental missing, explains Reeves. It's an extension of what's out there. We know we're in Batman's world. With this series, we're exploring a new path in Gotham. But Batman is looming. Just like the specter of the Riddler or everything that was established in the first film. We talk about it, we develop it. Everything starts from that.”

The Penguin will be an “incredibly violent” series, Colin Farrell teases

Lauren LeFranc, showrunner at the head of the team of writers of The Penguin adds:

“For me, the goal is to offer something different. Matt's films are told from Batman's point of view, so the stakes are very high, he observes the city from above. Here, it's another perspective. With Oz, we dive into the streets of the city, we walk in its dust, its fog… And he looks up, dreaming of rising in this society.”

For Colin Farrell, The Penguin fits well into the continuity of The Batman, as he explained to Entertainment Weekly this summer:

“I loved playing this character in The Batmanand the idea of developing it in depth in an eight-hour story was really interesting. To delve into the past of this character, into his psychology. His personal story is central to this series.”

The Penguin will be broadcast from September 20 on Max. Here is its trailer:
