The death of Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin has been confirmed, his family announced early Sunday.

Goldberg-Polin, 23, was abducted from a music festival in southern Israel on October 7 during a Hamas attack on the Jewish state. He lost part of his left arm in a grenade explosion.

His body was found Saturday in the tunnels under Rafah, along with five other hostages, after being killed by Hamas.

An American-Israeli national, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 2008 at the age of seven, according to a statement from his family. He is survived by his parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, and two sisters.

Goldberg-Polin's family and friends have traveled the world to demand her release and met with world leaders, including officials from the Biden administration.

President Biden said he was “devastated and outraged” by the news of Goldberg-Polin’s death.

“This is as tragic as it is reprehensible,” he said. “Make no mistake, Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. And we will continue to work around the clock to reach an agreement to secure the release of the remaining hostages.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, also a Democratic presidential candidate, said her prayers are with Goldberg-Polin's loved ones as they mourn her loss.

“Hamas is an evil terrorist organization,” Harris said. “With these killings, Hamas has even more American blood on its hands. I strongly condemn Hamas’s continued brutality, and the world must do the same. From the massacre of 1,200 people to the sexual violence, the hostage-taking, and these murders, Hamas’ depravity is clear and horrifying.”

“The threat that Hamas poses to the Israeli people – and to American citizens in Israel – must be eliminated, and Hamas cannot control Gaza,” she added. “The Palestinian people have also suffered under Hamas rule for nearly two decades.”

The other bodies found on Saturday were those of Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Staff Sergeant Ori Danino.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “Whoever murders the kidnapped people does not want an agreement. We are living in difficult times. The heart of the entire nation is torn.”

Like all citizens of Israel, I was deeply shocked by the terrible, cold-blooded murder of six of our kidnapped persons.

The six victims were shot dead by their captors shortly before the arrival of the Israeli Defense Forces, according to the Israeli military. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he “embraces[s] their families with all my heart, and I apologize[s] for not bringing them home safely.

“A few hours ago, we informed the families that the bodies of their loved ones had been found by IDF troops in an underground tunnel in Rafah,” IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement. “According to our initial assessment, they were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists shortly before we reached them.”
