Before Anxiety, there was also Shame…

Inside Out 2 continues its rise in cinemas and has accumulated, since its release in June, eight million admissions in France. The child turned teenager, Riley, is back with a whole bunch of new emotions dominated by Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Because it is when we grow up that our emotions change and that life is no longer just a succession of joy, sadness, fear and disgust. Very present in this second part, this ball of energy with shaggy hair was not supposed to be the only one to take control of the dashboard. Originally, she came hand in hand with another emotion: Shame.

Published a few days ago, a penciled deleted scene named “Shame Spiral” reveals the first and last visual of this erased emotion. At hockey camp, Riley plays “never have I ever” with other girls. While her friend Grace gets closer to Valentina with whom Riley also wants to be friends, the young girl finds herself plunged into a shame spiral.

In her brain, Shame, in the form of a young girl whose face is slightly hidden under her long hair, takes control, along with Anxiety. Climax: Grace reveals to the other girls that Riley once had feelings for a video game character – the same one seen in the film.

Director Kelsey Mann says in this video:

“I wanted to explore the feeling of not being good enough, that feeling when you're hard on yourself.”

However, Shame disappears in the final version, simplified by Anxiety, the sole mistress of the situation. This is not the only emotion to have disappeared. Wiping out certain emotions and in order to avoid a surplus that would have led to confusion and a film that was too dark, Guilt and Suspicion never saw the light of day. Only Anxiety, Boredom, Envy and Embarrassment remain – a feeling rather close to Shame.

Absent from Riley's brain, shame is nevertheless present at certain moments in the film, mixed in particular with Embarrassment and Anxiety. And who knows, maybe it will make an appearance in a next Inside Out. The opportunity to see Nostalgia again with her, briefly appearing in the guise of an elderly person?

Before Inside Out 3, Dream Productions will release on Disney Plus in 2025
