Attacked by tamagotchi, VHS tapes and computers, a group of teenagers try to survive as the world goes up in smoke.

If Prince sang that we had to dance before the destruction of the world in his song “1999”, it is because the Y2K bug was not to be taken lightly, and that it was already inspiring pop culture. The Y2K bug, or Y2K in English, will speak especially to those born in the 20th century. At the time when the clocks went from 9 to 0 and the beginning of a new era was going to form a computer flaw causing the end of the system. No more computers, no more hospitals, no more planes… The end of civilization and the world as we knew it in 1999. Even worse for the alarmists, a general attack by robots against humanity! If today, this prophecy seems crazy, we must not forget that in 2012 some believed in a similar phenomenon.

Now imagine that this bug actually happened? That is the postulate of Y2Kthe new production from A24 studios, directed by Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street, The Wolf of Wall Street, Don't Look Up) and the creator of The Bear, Christopher Storer. Feeding on the superstitions of the time, Y2K considers the end of the world at the same time as the beginning of the century in a whole mixing apocalyptic comedy, science fiction and teen movie.

Rachel Zegler (Hunger Games: The Journey of the Serpent and the Songbird), Jaeden Martell (That), and Julian Dennison are a trio of teenagers who, while celebrating the New Year as it should be, find themselves teaming up to try to survive in the face of the collapse of the world. It all starts with a power cut, then a toy that has become completely uncontrollable and sets one of the guests on fire. What follows is a series of attacks, each one as crazy as the last: a VHS, a tamagotchi – yes, the same one that some of the spectators had during their youth – and robots that attack humans.

During the apocalypse, they will be able to count on other survivors, including Fred Durst, lead singer of the nu metal band Limp Bizkit, very popular at the time, playing a fictional version of himself. As well as Alicia Silverstone – star of the iconic 90s comedy, Clueless.

Delusional and completely absurd, Y2K will certainly attract the most nostalgic among Millennials and Gen Z. First feature film by Kyle Mooney, comedian on Saturday Night Live between 2013 and 2022, Y2K will be released in the United States on December 6. As for France, you will have to wait a little longer.
