Being “discreet” is a new trend taking over TikTok, and this new lifestyle is making people more mindful of how they present themselves.

According to some content creators, living a modest lifestyle means living frugally — and the word has gone viral, as more than 122,000 videos on TikTok include the hashtag #demure.

Jools Lebron is a TikTok creator based in Chicago, Illinois whose explainer video has been viewed over 23 million times. In the video, Lebron attempts to give examples of what it means to “act modestly.”

“You see how I put on makeup for work? Very reserved, very attentive,” LeBron said.

LeBron added: “I don't look like a clown when I go to work. I don't do a lot. I'm very attentive when I'm at work.”

The term “discreet” means “reserved” and “modest,” according to Merriam-Webster.

TikTok users have weighed in on the viral personality trend, with many saying they love using the word.

“I can’t help but say, ‘Very reserved, very attentive,’” one user commented, while another user said, “I love this and I don’t know why…”

Another person explained how they integrated a reserved personality by saying, “Today I took a straw for my drink and thought, ‘Very reserved.’”

Another user said they were confused, commenting: “I spent my whole day wondering if this was serious or a joke. I'm not very reserved or attentive to myself.”

In another TikTok video, LeBron explains how to act modestly at the airport.

“See how I walk through the airport? I don’t do much like those other girls. I get to my gate and get on the plane. I’m very cute, aren’t I, reserved.”

Other creators have given other examples of how someone can be reserved.

Campbell Puckett, a Georgia-based content creator, shared her take on the trend in a TikTok video that has reached over three million views.

In the video, Puckett is seen cutting an almond croissant with a fork and knife, saying his way of doing it is “wise.”

“You see how I eat this? I'm very modest. I'm very reserved. I'm very cute,” she said, adding, “I'm not messy. I don't like crumbs.”

Zach Jelks, a content creator who posts under the handle @undos on TikTok, has also explained modesty to his six million followers. One video in particular has reached over three million views after Jelks discusses a modest Chipotle order.

“See how edible my Chipotle bowl looks? See how you can see the contents of the bowl?” he asked.

After explaining that he doesn't ask for sour cream on the side rather than on top of his bowl, and that he only bought a small bag of chips, Jelks said this was an example of modesty.

In a TikTok video posted to her personal account, Charli XCX explained that “brat summer” is a “kind of messy girl who likes to party.”
