Where is the remake of Splash, starring Channing Tatum as a mermaid?

The original film, starring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks, returns this Sunday on Arte, so let's take stock of its reboot project. Did it fall through?

Mermaids will be in the spotlight this Sunday on Channel 7. Arte will first offer SplashRon Howard's cult rom-com, released in 1984, then a portrait of Esther Williams, nicknamed “Hollywood Mermaid”already visible for free in replay.

The pitch of Splash ? A young boy is saved from drowning by a mermaid. Twenty years later, she suggests that he follow her into the ocean rather than continue living on Earth…

In 2016, Imagine Entertainment, the company headed by Ron Howard, announced the launch of'a remake with Channing Tatum and Jillian Bel in the lead roles, but with a twist: the star comedian of Magic Mike would have embodied the mermaid, and her playmate 22 Jump Street would have played the human rescued as a child and falling in love with the sea creature. All reimagined by Marja-Lewis Ryan, a screenwriter notably known for The L Word: Generation Q.

Brian Grazer, who was announced as producer alongside Reid Carolin (Tatum's sidekick on most of his films, notably his trilogy on male striptease), and Peter Kieran, confirmed in early 2021 that the remake project Splash was still relevant. Except that since then, no more news: everyone seems to have moved on.

Tatum notably fulfilled a long-held dream by participating in Deadpool & Wolverine (details can be read here, if you're not afraid of spoilers) and he also starred in Zoe Kravitz's first film, Blink Twicea film in which the two actors fell in love.

If he can't make another Splash, maybe Tatum can take on another remake project? He's reportedly planning on relaunch Ghostbut there too “differently” of the model with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.
