Twenty-two years after Gerry, Doug Liman brings them together in a buddy movie. Simply cool.

If Hollywood continues to feed on the corpse of 80s cinema (at this point, there is not much left to eat), the buddy moviea genre that was very popular at the time, was rarely part of this cannibalism enterprise. It is therefore surrounded by a certain curiosity that The Instigatorsa heist film and action comedy that literally follows the formula of two guys who can't stand each other but end up falling into each other's arms: Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck), a desperate father and an ex-convict, decide to team up for a heist that goes wrong. The two bumbling idiots are chased by the police, the corrupt mayor of the city (Ron Perlman) and criminals who want to kill them. The pleasure of the reunion between Damon and Affleck works on both sides of the screen; zero egos here, just two actors in full possession of their abilities who reconnect with the simple joy of making a film between friends. But Doug Liman refuses to be satisfied with that and injects his know-how in the field of action during some very lively chase scenes (in a car on a coastal road, in a fire truck in the middle of town, etc.). The jokes and the impeccable gallery of supporting actors (Paul Walter Hauser, Michael Stuhlbarg, Hong Chau, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones…) do the rest. An editor from the 80s would have cut 15 minutes, but in this specific case we won't complain about having a little extra.

Of Doug Liman With Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Hong Chau… Duration 1 h 41. Available on Apple TV +
