But how exactly were the Minions born? The truth interview with its creators

Sometimes born in a laboratory, sometimes as old as the dinosaurs, they are creatures full of mysteries.

Since their first appearance in 2010 in the first part of Despicable Me, The audience loves them. Small and cute, but above all very funny, the Minions have won over the public – it's the “Minion-Mania”. Yet their creation was an accident. Interviewed by First in 2015 on the occasion of the release of Minionsco-director Pierre Coffin explained that they were originally conceived as trolls, assistants to Gru. They ended up softening their features, painting them yellow and that was it. The Minions were born.

But the story of this birth is the one on paper. What about in real life? In Gru's world, how were the Minions conceived? The magazine Vulture recently posed the question to screenwriters Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul, both of whom helmed the first three Despicable Me.

According to them, these little yellow creatures in overalls were born in the laboratory of Dr. Nefario, the mad scientist who helps Gru in his missions to do evil. The goal was to develop an army of henchmen: “It's a bit like Saruman who in the Lord of the Rings created an army of Orcs. It is common among villains to create their own army,” explained Cinco Paul.

Moreover in Despicable Mea poster in the girls' room goes in this direction. It shows an elaborate plan for the implementation of this project.

For Cinco Paul, it was obvious:

“They were devoted to Gru. You don't see that anywhere else but Gru. It was obvious to us that that's the way it happened. There was never any discussion about it. They're biologically from the same branch of mutated DNA. They're the same family. They're the same cloned version. They grew up in a petri dish.”

This is why they are all different with identifiable personalities. There are also no female Minions, although the idea was germinated in Despicable Me 2.

Girls in Minions? Not as you imagine

Then came Minionsand with it, a new theory about the origins of the Minions. From creation, we moved on to evolution:

“For the purposes of the film, it was fun to show them through history. Entertainment trumps any logic and any previously established basis.”

Because remember, the introduction of this feature film presents the birth of the Minions at the same time as that of the first living beings – millions of years ago. As old as the dinosaursthe Minions have since followed only one goal: to serve the most evil beings on Earth. Starting with the great T-Rex, whose existence is extinguished because of these little yellow men. Then the pharaohs, and finally Napoleon. As Paul Cinco explained, it was easier to end on this already well-dated historical figure, to avoid having to answer the thorny question: in which camps would the Minions have found themselves during the two world wars?

Minions have been alive since the dawn of time. They are immortal: “They're their Looney Tunes world. They're invincible. They can't die.”

And if they always fail, and end up meeting a young Gru still a child in the 70s, this variation of the History with a capital H of the Minions has sown confusion among some. The scriptwriters were particularly afraid of sabotaging the original work of Pierre Coffin, creator of the Minions, and of course, that the spectators would notice this change. Which was not the case.

However, seeking logic in this, Cinco Paul described his own theory:

“I think that Minions, It's kind of like the bedside book that Gru reads to the Minions. For me, the movies Minions are memories already integrated so that they do not have to face the fact that they were born in a laboratory, so that they feel like they have a great and glorious origin. But it is not established.”
