Vice President Kamala Harris officially clinched her party's nomination for the 2024 presidential election on Friday, with the Democratic National Committee announcing that the vice president has received the votes of a majority of pledged delegates at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

“I am very proud to confirm that Vice President Harris received more than a majority of the votes cast by all convention delegates and will be the Democratic Party’s nominee after voting closes on Monday,” DNC Chairwoman Jaime Harrison said in a statement.

And Harris, in a call with supporters Friday, said: “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States.”

She stressed that “the tireless work of our delegates, state leaders and staff was essential in making this moment possible.”

The news came as a virtual roll call for the nomination was launched by the DNC on Thursday and runs through Monday.

And while Harris' nomination was never in doubt, the vice president was the only candidate to qualify for the presidential nomination roll call — marking a historic milestone in the nation's history, as Harris becomes the first woman of color to lead a major political party's national ticket.

One of these five Democrats could be Harris' running mate

While the official nominating vote by delegates is taking place remotely, the DNC says a ceremonial roll call will take place at the Democratic National Convention, which begins Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Harris' nomination comes less than two weeks after President Biden's bombshell announcement that he was ending his 2024 reelection campaign against former President Trump, the GOP nominee.

Biden's stunning news comes as pressure mounts within the Democratic Party for him to step down after a disastrous performance in last month's first presidential debate with Trump. But Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris sparked a wave of support for the vice president from governors, senators, House members and other Democratic Party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris announced she had secured her party’s nomination by winning the verbal support of a majority of the convention’s nearly 4,000 delegates.

With Harris' nomination now out of doubt, speculation has been rife over the past week and a half about who the vice president will choose as her running mate. Harris' campaign announced that the vice president and her soon-to-be-named running mate will embark on a seven-state campaign tour, starting Tuesday in Pennsylvania.

Once the virtual presidential nomination call ends at 6 p.m. ET Monday, DNC rules will allow Harris to place her running mate's name in the nomination.

According to the DNC, the convention chair would then declare that candidate as the party's vice presidential nominee.
