When James Bond Skydived With the Queen at the Olympics

Twelve years before Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt, Daniel Craig and Elizabeth II filmed a great sketch for Danny Boyle.

Tom Cruise is reportedly preparing a giant stunt for the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. A video of about two minutes mixing motorbikes and parachute jumps, which the star of Impossible mission would be concocting for several months.

If it comes to fruition, this idea will be an excellent way to create a link between the Olympic Games being held in France this year and those in Los Angeles planned for 2028.

While waiting to see the actor who plays Ethan Hunt perform another parachute jump, this time over the Stade de France, then the famous Hollywood sign in LA, we can't resist the urge to watch a similar scene designed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) twelve years ago.

It was one of the most memorable sequences of the London Olympics, quickly shared by the BBC. Remember:

Sign Danny Boyle (who staged the entire ceremony), this passage is entitled “Happy & Glorious”in reference to the words of the English national anthem, “God Save the Queen”. We see James Bond (Daniel Craig) enter Buckingham Palace and meet the Queen there Elizabeth II. This is also the first time that the Queen has agreed to appear in a fictional film – she will play the game again a few years later for her Jubilee, in the company of another national hero, Paddington.

Bond therefore accompanies the Queen in a helicopter that flies to the Olympic stadium (passing under Tower Bridge, all the same), flying over all of London, including the statue of Winston Churchill which comes to life and greets the sovereign and her faithful secret agent. And to arrive above the stadium, and to parachute – in the colours of the English flag – to the sound of the James Bond theme, of course…

Even though these are obviously stand-ins – Daniel Craig's tragically died in 2013 while practicing another extreme sport – it was one of the most successful moments of a rather epic ceremony, where we were able to see Kenneth Branagh, Rowan Atkinson And JK Rowling reciting Peter Pan while Mary Poppins fought Voldemort…
