A New York Magazine cover featuring Vice President Kamala Harris titled “Welcome to Kamalot” was the target of several jokes on social media Monday.

“Welcome to Kamalot! Our new issue looks back at the two weeks that reshaped the 2024 election — and the excitement of taking a risk with Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee,” reads the X post, which also includes a link to the report.

“In the wake of President Joe Biden’s historic departure from his re-election campaign, our new issue captures Kamala Harris’ dizzying, infectious and potentially risky presidential campaign,” the post continues.

Social media users criticized both the image and the message.

“The pun is about a fictional monarch for whom no one in his reign voted,” said The Spectator's Stephen Miller.

“It's a fun play on words, but a magazine referencing a media-created myth about a former Democratic president is a bit of a stretch,” wrote Joe Gabriel Simonson of the Washington Free Beacon.

Media outlets such as Not the Bee also mocked the cover with references to “Monty Python”.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shared the image and accused the media of trying to “manufacture” Harris into a candidate she is not.

“Greeky and dystopian,” said Sarah Lee, editor of Townhall.com. Several others called it “bizarre” and “embarrassing.”

But some Harris supporters were inspired by the photo.

“Kamalot” – we love her!, wrote the Democratic Coalition. “Kamala Harris has energized the Democratic Party in a week like no one has ever seen.”

“Since we sent our last issue to the printer, Donald Trump has survived an assassination attempt, J.D. Vance has joined his ticket, Republicans have been crowing all week in Milwaukee about their imminent victory, Joe Biden has come down with COVID, his closest Democratic peers have forced him out of the race, and Kamala Harris—with astonishing speed—has wrapped up the race to succeed him,” editor David Haskell said of the new issue.

“We’ve created an issue that tackles all of that, and takes a look at what may be the biggest financial and political scandal of Trump’s second term, and sends the Look Book to Sandy Hook nude beach, and much more (including an extremely long, relatively low-risk, literary beach read for the ages),” he added.

President Biden has endorsed Harris for president after announcing last Sunday that he was dropping out of the presidential race due to her poor debate performance and concerns about her health and stamina. Since that decision, several media outlets have appeared to rally behind the vice president and defend her over past controversies, including claiming that she was appointed as Biden’s “border czar.”

Harris was widely dubbed the “border czar” after Biden tasked her in March 2021 with addressing the root causes of mass migration from Central and South America. Although the Biden administration has rejected the title, the term has been widely used by her critics and several news outlets, until now, when she appears poised to replace Biden as the Democratic leader.

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, a former running mate of President Trump, is among the Republicans who have suggested that selecting Harris as the next nominee is undemocratic because it bypasses voters.

“This is a threat to democracy, not to the Republican Party, which fights for democracy every day,” Vance said at a campaign rally in Ohio.

Trump's campaign announced Monday that Trump would debate Harris if she wins the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention runs from August 19-22.
